On February 28,
1988, thirteen women met in 205 D Roosevelt Hall of Governors Residence Halls on the Amherst Campus of the State University
of New York at Buffalo. Stephanie Argentine served as the chair of the meeting until Melissa Servey was elected President.
The other founding officers were elected at this meeting: Amy Ferry (Vice-President), Jennifer Record (Secretary), Amy Pitluk
(Treasurer), and Tracy Rynkowski (Pledge Marshall).
The Second meeting was held two days later, March 1st. On this
day, the Sisters chose the name Delta Xi Omega and the colors green, purple, and silver for their organization. Also, they
decided upon the following objectives, a strong commitment to school spirit, the enhancement of academics, helping women to
obtain their goals, involvement in community work, and the establishment of life-long ties. They discussed the benefits of
a local sorority versus those of a national one. It was decided that being local would give the organization the freedom to
develop as the founders had envisioned it. Melissa also appointed a sorority historian, philanthropist, official artist, IGC
liaison, and social chair.
At subsequent meetings, the sisters selected Dr. Barbara Howell as the faculty advisor (she
was the founding President of a local sorority as an undergraduate), modified the sorority colors to violet, kelly green,
and silver. They selected "Beginning of a Lasting Strength" as the sorority motto and the iris as the sorority flower. Amy
Pitluk's crest design was also adopted. Work was started on the Constitution and By-Laws of Delta Xi Omega.
On April
28, 1988, the University at Buffalo temporarily recognized the Alpha Chapter of Delta Xi Omega. The Constitution and By-Laws
were adopted on February 28, 1989, The Sisters' hard work and dedication was rewarded on November 3, 1989 when the Chapter
received permanent recognition from the University at Buffalo.
